It’s confusing and confounding going to school while your neighbor-schools are out there still posting #summergoals on their IGs. WHY?!
While most of the students are now back to school, some Universities and College students, especially in the Metro, remain on vacation mode enjoying ‘bed weather’ brought by the start of the rainy season. This is after the shifting of the academic calendar of some schools which moves the usual opening classes from June to July or August of the year.
Find out when school will officially start for these following schools.
UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES
The top university in the country is one of the pioneer schools which immediately shifted its academic calendar two years ago. Classes in UP Diliman for 2016-2017 will begin on August 8, 2016.
UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS
One of the considered ‘Big 4’ universities in the Philippines, University of Santo Tomas in Manila has moved its academic calendar back in 2014 along with UP. For the third academic year, the university will start its classes in August 2016.
ATENEO DE MANILA UNIVERSITY
The Katipunan-based University also joined other schools in moving the calendar. The Atenistas will be returning to school on August
DE LA SALLE UNIVERSITY
The De La Salle University, which is known for its trimester system, also adjusted its class opener in 2014. Now, the first term of the school in Taft will be starting on September 12, 2016.
FAR EASTERN UNIVERSITY
The Far Eastern University is taking a big leap as well, following the ‘Big 4’ schools in shifting the academic calendar. This year, the Green and Gold Tamaraws will be back in Morayta on August 1, 2016.
SAN BEDA COLLEGE
The San Beda College will be starting its classes on July 13, 2016.
UNIVERSITY OF ASIA AND THE PACIFIC
To synchronize with universities abroad, the University of Asia and the Pacific will also be moving its academic calendar. The school will start its classes on August 8, 2016.
SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY BAGUIO CITY
Although far from Metro Manila, the Saint Louis University in Baguio City will also be joining the top universities in the country to shift the academic calendar. The school will open classes on August 8, 2016.
CAVITE STATE UNIVERSITY
Another university outside Manila followed the academic calendar shift. Cavite State University or CvSU will open the academic year 2016-2017 on August 1, 2016.
The cause of the calendar shift
The calendar shift is an attempt, according to several reports, to produce globally competitive students while trying to achieve internationalized education standards. The move is in relations to the ASEAN Economic Community integration. However, only a few universities are keen on following the change in the school year.
Even the Commission on Higher education (CHEd) doubts the success of the calendar change, saying that it does not advise schools to go after it. The office said through a statement that different school opening is okay as long as it falls within the boundaries of the law.
CHEd, however, insisted that the month of June remain to be the most feasible start of classes. It cited the situation in agricultural-backed provinces where cycles are followed by farmers and/or fishermen.
